The following post is purely for educational purposes and for testing. Do not root your device or follow any of the following steps if you do not know what you are doing. We are not responsible for any damages occurred to your device following our instructions.Note: This is a tutorial for rooting Google Nexus 5 and that means no other phones will be able to be rooted using this, doing so may damage the device or brick it.
Now that you have decided to continue rooting this is the initial requirements you should have.
1) Google Nexus 5 with more than 70% charge.
2) A PC with all the drivers installed. If you don't have the drivers installed download it from here.
3) Download ADB tools here.
4) Download Super SU for the device from here
5) Copy the Super SU zip file to your directory folder (The internal Memory). Do not copy the file into a folder. Copy it directly.
6) Download the Clockwork recovery mode here
7) Download Kernal patch for lollipop(recommended) extract the files and copy to the root directory, that is directly to internal memory.
8) Make sure you have all the above things ready, now switch off the phone then press and hold Power and Volume Down until you see the Fastboot menu. phone must be connected to the PC with a USB cable.
DO NOT UNPLUG THE CABLE FROM NOW ON UNTIL TOLD TO DO SO
9) go to the folder where you have downloaded and installed adb drivers. In the blank space of the folder, hold 'Shift key' and click right mouse button and select "open command prompt here".
Once the command prompt is open type in the following commands.
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.5-hammerhead.imgThis will run a series of commands inside the phone to enable CWRM (ClockworkMod recovery)
Next enter the following command in the command prompt.
fastboot flash boot boot.imgThis will patch the kernal.
10) Use the volume keys to select Recovery Mode on the device and press the Power button to enter.
That is (volume up+volume down keys+power button)11) Inside the recovery mod, use the volume keys to select ''install zip'' and press the Power button to confirm, then select ''choose zip from SD card'' and locate Super SU file (it should appear at the bottom of the list in /sdcard/0/) you have downloaded earlier.
12) After the installation click on "reboot now" they will ask for a root fix click yes and the phone will reboot.
Note : It may take longer than usual to boot up as it runs and installs some super user binaries, don't freak out instead be patient. once the phone is finished booted up you will have root access.
Once the phone has booted up YOU CAN UNPLUG THE USB.
